Thursday Evenings in April, From 5 to 8 pm (3 hours each, 5 sessions total)
150$ per student
During this five-week course, you will explore turning an original sketch of yours into your very own screenprinted shirts or patches! This class will focus on traditional (non-digital) approaches to creating screenprints, alongside acting as an intro to anyone who hasn't done much (or any) screenprinting before! We will be creating a one-layer screenprint that we can print on fabric patches and even shirts! Images will be under 10”x 12” inches.
Taught by Printmaker and BFA graduate (24’), Trinity pote. Having a Printmaking degree from KCAI, she looks forward to sharing her knowledge after many years focused on printmaking.
Students will learn basic knowledge and applications of screenprinting in the scope of garment printing. Students will be led through creating and finishing a screenprint to be applied to fabric. Planning color(s), making an image with the idea of “garments” in mind. are all outcomes of this course. Students will learn to, by hand, transform a sketch into a final print. This class is suited for intermittent printers to beginners
Open to all skill levels, at the end of this class, you will leave with at least 4 fabric patches and one t-shirt with your own screenprinted graphic. Experimentation will be more than welcome; please plan on your image being 9x12” at maximum.
Tools and Materials will be provided, but please bring some sketches already prepared at a 9x12” size or under for us to get ready to start turning said sketches into screenprints! We will also discuss potentially bringing in your own garments as well.
Evening One: Look over students' pre-drawn sketches. Learn how to turn said sketch into a screenprint image ready to be burned. A brief overview of screenprinting & a demo on how to coat screens. Reflect on ways to use a single image in multiple ways and the way it fits on a garment.
Evening Two: Cutting our cotton patches for printing, and learning how to register screens for fabric printing. Students will also start mixing colors for their patches and have a brief discussion on color theory. We will also plan to also prep shirts for printing
Evening Three: Finish any color mixing and start printing! We’ll practice on newsprint and then move to the fabric patches! Much printing and hands-on learning this day.
Evening Four: This day will basically be a print party! We will finish the class, provide patches and a t-shirt, and learn how to heat set them.
Evening Five: Bring your own fabric/garments day! By this day youll be a confident fabric printer and know which types of fabrics are perfect for screenprint, and youll be able to apply this knowledge to anything you have that you want to spice up with screenprint!
Fee: 150$
