artist bio and statement:
Thayer N.G. Bray is a draw-er, printmaker, bookbinder, and sculptor based in Kansas City. He earned a BFA in printmaking and a minor in Art History from KU in 2009 and an MBA from UMKC in 2023. For almost a decade he was shop assistant, then edition printer, at the Lawrence Lithography Workshop in Kansas City, MO. His last solo show, Caregivers, was exhibited in May 2023 in Kansas City. He is the Director of Exhibitions at Kansas City Artists Coalition, and the owner and director of Greenhouse Print Space, an artist-run, community access print studio, in Kansas City.
Thayer’s caregiver series of small man figures sgrafitto-ed on clay, wandering through fields of paper and grass, represent his investigations concerning masculine identity and its paths forward. Narrative and sequentiality are at play in the suggested serial presentation of similar figurative forms, and grappling with further ideas of masculinity through echoing textile printing like toile and camouflage in handmade paper land elements.
